This maze was created to pay homage to the ocean as we all wrap up our summer. There’s nothing as fun as heading to the beach in the summer. I wanted to honor the incredible sea life that live in the depths of the sea.

The other reason that I chose to use turtles in this maze is because I am the unwitting owner of a turtle myself. My brother-in-law decided to give my eight year old son a Red Eared Slider as a birthday present last year.

The problem was that my brother-in-law didn’t do any research before buying the gift. We quickly realized there were multiple challenges with this aquatic turtle. The first issue is that you need one gallon of water per inch of turtle and the Red Ear Slider can grow up to 12 inches. Which would mean that I would need over 100 gallons of water to house this pet. The other issue is that the lifespan of this turtle is around 40 years. Which means my son would be 48 years old when his birthday present would die. Regardless, I’ll have to admit that I have grown quite fond of Tippy the Turtle and he inspired me to make this maze.

Below are one of the tests I created as I developed this maze as well as an image of the maze in process. The turtle maze created a new challenge. This is the first maze I created that involved an underwater component. I incorporated the “bubbles” into the water pattern to give the illusion of movement. The intention was to appear that the turtles were swimming through the current of the ocean. I was inspired by the East Australian Current scene in Finding Nemo.
