Hand Drawn Camping Tents Maze – Free Printable PDF
Now that we’re in Spring and heading into Summer I wanted to create a maze that represents one of my favorite activities… camping. Both of my sons are in the Boy / Cub Scout programs and some of the best memories we have had together were during the multiple camping trips with the Pack. There’s something magical about getting back to nature and living with less tech even if it’s only for a weekend. This maze is a representation of a Boy Scout camping event and you can almost hear the excitement of the boys enjoying the wilderness uninterrupted.
Humans were living in a tents since the beginning of our existence. Armies and hunters on the march used tents for living structures for millennia. The modern camping tent is based on a model invented by a US Army officer in 1856 who took inspiration from the Native American tepees. In the first Boy Scout handbook in 1911 there were 10 different types of tents.
It wasn’t until after WWII that camping took off as a popular family vacation. Between the creation of the National Park system, the Interstate Highway and the abundance of automobiles exploring the incredible natural beauty of this country became accessible to most Americans. Camping has been a love of this country ever since. Every season we fill up the more than 17 thousand campsites around the states to escape the modern world for a short time.

Above are the sketches and color tests I created while developing this maze. I wanted to make sure I got the color of the tents correct before I committed. I also had concerns about the campfire because I haven’t created a maze with fire before. The other big concern I had was that the image would have too much green and there wouldn’t be enough contrast to be interesting.

Above is the maze halfway completed. All of my mazes start out as pencil drawings and are filled in with marker as i go. This maze incorporates a game element which is similar to the gondola maze or the fishing lures maze. I like to add additional challenges to the mazes if possible.
Below is the maze before adding color. If you click the image you can print a version of the maze without color added. Some people prefer these versions because they can either use them as coloring pages or prefer to see the line breaks easier.
If you have an idea for a maze I’d love to hear about it. Additionally, if you just have some feedback you’d like to share please let me know via email () or social media (

Don’t want to print the mazes at home? Please consider using the VistaPrint link below. VistaPrint is the vendor I use to print my mazes on heavy card-stock to hand out to friends and family. I have found that they are the highest quality and the most affordable of the print vendors. Also, I like that they allow for small batch printing which keeps the price affordable. I print them on heavy cardstock postcards and they turn out fantastic.
If you like our work and want to show your appreciation please consider donating with the link below. We would like to keep these mazes free but there are costs to keep the website functioning. If you enjoyed these mazes please consider donating any amount to help.
Feel free to print or reproduce the puzzles for personal, church, school or institutional use. If you need puzzles or mazes for your small-to-medium circulation newspaper, or you would like to purchase puzzles or mazes for a book, periodical, app or website please contact me.

May 17, 2020Very cool maze and such a great topic idea! It is, however, making me so sad that summer music festival season with all of the camping has been canceled! Thanks for sharing and linking up!
